Our experts preview each race on Cup Day including the Melbourne Cup, for which we have picks from the Bettingpro.com.au tipsters.

Race 1 - OTTAWA STAKES (1000m) 10:40am

Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (1000m) winner MADEENATY was ultra-impressive on debut and is clearly the one to beat having won down the straight already. Waterhouse and Bott are sending INVINCIBLE STAR ($14) to Melbourne and have booked Joao Moreira to ride which is a big clue that the horse has some talent. Likewise Phillip Stokes is sending BROADBAND ($21) across the border without a public barrier trial, and is he gets a run, he may be worth having something on at odds. WIRED ($34) was good in a trial against a couple that line up here and can be thrown in the exotics.

1st – Madeenaty
2nd – Invincible Star
3rd – Broadband
4th - Wired

Race 2 - TAB.COM.AU TROPHY (1700m) 11:20am

MODEL DRAGON is a mare with huge ability and an explosive turn of foot. We should see the best of her at Flemington with the long straight to unwind on. TIDY PROPHET ($11) is racing very consistently and just seemed to peak on her run over 2040m at Moonee Valley. The drop back in trip looks suitable, and she’ll be finishing hard. JESSY BELLE ($12) and METAPHORICAL ($13) have the strongest form but have to carry big weights – they can figure in the finish.

1st – Model Dragon
2nd – Tidy Prophet
3rd – Jessy Belle
4th - Metaphorical

Race 3 - PRINCE OF PENZANCE PLATE (2800m) 12:00pm

Chris Waller has a strong hand in this race and considering Hugh Bowman is aboard MURPHY’S DELIGHT, you would think he’s the stable’s top pick. He comes to Melbourne with solid form behind Junoob in the Tatt’s Club Cup (2400m) but Junoob finished 15 lengths from Oceanographer who only finished just in front of KINEMA ($10) in the Geelong Cup. For that reason, I’m sticking with Kinema despite the wide barrier. MORNING MIX ($5) meets Super Haze 6kg better at the weights and can run 3rd, while FIRENZE ($11) can run another honest race and get 4th.

1st – Kinema
2nd Murphy’s Delight
3rd – Morning Mix
4th - Firenze

Race 4 - LAVAZZA PRONTISSIMO (1400m) 12:40pm

DEMONSTRATE is absolutely flying and can step up to 1400m now with two good wins over 1200m under his belt. SOVEREIGN NATION ($9) gets blinkers again and has solid form this campaign. RAGEESE ($3.90) has similar form and has drawn to get a soft run behind the speed. MAGIC BOY ($34) looks over the odds considering he wasn’t far from Sovereign Nation, and he looks ready to peak at his fourth run this campaign.

1st – Demonstrate
2nd – Sovereign Nation
3rd – Rageese
4th – Magic Boy

Race 5 - SCHWEPPES #FLEMINGTONFLING (1000m) 1:20pm

Tough race but down in weight and distance I’m keen on NEAPOLITAN as big odds. The form has been franked through Posh Journey winning again and she’s very speedy. I also like SELENIA ($20) dropping back in trip at Flemington and will have BIASED WITNESS ($4.20) in for 3rd as he’s drawn the outside which didn’t race well on Saturday. Look out for HELLBOUND ($51) at massive odds too with Price/Oliver combo.

1st – Neapolitan
2nd Selenia
3rd – Biased Witness
4th - Hellbound

Race 6 - LEXUS HYBRID PLATE (1400m) 2:00pm

QUICK FEET is a far better horse on Good ground and should get that on Cup Day – looks overs to mine. SAMARA DANCER ($17) will find this easier and should enjoy a better run this time. JENNIFER LYNN ($10) will be storming home again and INVINCIBELLA ($12) just needs some luck from the wide gate.

1st – Quick Feet
2nd – Samara Dancer
3rd – Jennifer Lynn
4th - Invincibella

Race 7 - EMIRATES MELBOURNE CUP (3200m) 3:00pm

1st – Jameka
2nd – Oceanographer
3rd – Wicklow Brave
4th – Big Orange

Race 8 - JAMES BOAG'S PREMIUM STAKES (1800m) 4:00pm

On breeding, FABRIZIO should have no trouble getting the extra trip, especially seeing he drops 2kg and will run them along at a quick speed and break their hearts before the straight. Luke Nolen is a great choice of jockey and can steer this one to victory. Dean Yendall guided TURNITAROUND ($21) to a win when second-up at Flemington last campaign and the horse is going better this time around. HI WORLD ($18) is better than his last two runs suggest and can charge home, while PLOT THE COURSE ($8.50) was outstanding last start and can figure in the finish.

1st – Fabrizio
2nd – Turnitaround
3rd – Hi World
4th – Plot The Course

Race 9 - MSS SECURITY SPRINT (1200m) 4:40pm

SIR BACCHUS is still on the up and make it back-to-back wins providing he handles the straight. $34 is an absolutely ridiculous price for LORD VON COSTA in this. He has finished runner-up to Spieth and Rich Charm at Flemington and defeated Prince Of Brooklyn in hiss only other run down the straight – each –way all day. SECRET AGENDA ($9) and MISS PROMISCUITY ($19) are strong chances also.

1st – Sir Bacchus
2nd – Lord Von Costa
3rd – Secret Agenda
4th – Miss Promiscuity

Race 10 - THE HONG KONG JOCKEY CLUB STAKES (1400m) 5:15pm

The last race before everyone can ramp up celebrations and as they say, ‘back Weir, drink beer.’ Darren Weir’s ROCKOLICIOUS is drawn perfectly to sit right up on the speed and take out the last event on Cup Day. CAVALOCE ($19) has a blistering turn of foot on her day and she’ll be suited by Flemington, while COUNTESS MARINOV ($51) can surprise at massive odds and SILENT SEDITION ($5) has to go in the mix.

1st – Rockolicious
2nd – Cavaloce
3rd – Countess Marinov
4th – Silent Sedition

MELBOURNE CUP DAY BETTING

There are a number of ways to bet on horse racing this weekend from a standard win or place bet to quadrellas and multibets.

SINGLE: The most common bet. The single bet involves betting on your selection to win, place, or both (each-way). If betting each-way (see our guide for what an each-way bet is), the stake is doubled as you are betting on your selection to win, and also to place.

QUINELLA: A Quinella bet is available on every thoroughbred, harness and greyhound race provided there are at least three or more runners. To win a Quinella, you must successfully predict the 1st and 2nd placegetters in any order

EXACTA: An exacta is exactly the same as a quinella. However, you must successfully predict the 1st and 2nd placegetters in the correct order

TRIFECTA: A Trifecta bet is available on every thoroughbred, harness and greyhound race provided there are at least four or more runners. To win a Trifecta, you must successfully predict the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placegetters in a given race.

FIRST4: A First4 bet is available on most thoroughbred, harness and greyhound race provided there are at least four or more runners. To win a First4, you must successfully predict the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th placegetters in a given race.

MYSTERY BET: A Mystery Bet takes the guess work out of picking a Trifecta and is generated by the betting agency’s computer. The computer system will randomly select three runners and if they fill the placings you win the Trifecta.

QUADDIE: A Quaddie bet, or Quadrella bet as it is fully known, is available on most thoroughbred, harness and greyhound race meetings. A quaddie is betting on the winners of four nominated races, which are typically the last four races of any meeting, and is a very popular bet.

MULTIBET: Multibets offer a great way to secure big winning returns on your bets as you combine various bets into one, and are proving to be an extremely popular way to bet. A multibet combines any number of bets from two to 25 into one single bet and dramatically increases the odds.

PATENT BET: A Patent bet is similar to a three-leg multibet but is made up of seven separate bets: three singles, three doubles and a trio. Where a multibet requires all selections to win for a return, a patent bet will yield a return from just one winner.

ALL-IN BETTING: All-In betting involves a bookmaker offering fixed odds on selected feature races prior to the declaration of the final field. All-In betting on the Melbourne Cup, for example, is available for the better part of 12 months leading into the event. The risk with All-In Betting is that you will not receive your stake back if your horse is scratched.
