Roughies Tips - 3 roughies to back on Cox Plate day at Moonee Valley

Lucia Valentina is a danger to the favourites in the Cox Plate

It's one of the most iconic days on the Australian racing calendar this Saturday when the action heads to Moonee Valley for the running of the Cox Plate (2040m) and the forecast wet conditions shouldn't deter punters.

There is plenty of value to be found on the 10-race programme and we have picked out the best three roughies to back for the day, each-way.

Race 6 - 3:00PM P.W. Glass Fillies Classic (1600 METRES)

Race 6 sees the girls do battle in the Fillies Classic (1600m) and one at odds to consider is the David Brideoake-trained Nurse Kitchen. The daughter of Savabeel has had just the two starts for a win in an easier affair at Geelong over 1300m, but should have finished a lot closer at her next outing, which came at Caulfield. On that occasion she jumped awkwardly and found plenty of trouble in the straight where she was badly held up before being all but flattened with 100m to go and finishing 10th, six lengths from the winner, Sylpheed. She looked to be travelling nicely before the interference and is one galloper that should be suited to the step up to the 1600m as she is bred to love the mile. In a race that features a big field and a stack of unknowns, she is one to consider at odds.

Race 7 - 3:35PM Schweppes Crystal Mile (1600 METRES)

The iron horse, Royal Rapture, appears for yet another start this campaign when he goes around in the Crystal Mile (1600m) and is well worth a crack at the each-way odds. The Darren Weir-trained galloper is on the sixth line up betting at the $9 quote, which appears to be value as he ticks a lot of boxes for this. The seven-year-old was a comfortable three-length winner at his last start at the track ahead of Pilote D'essai and will thrive on what should be a wet track. He finished a narrow 4th at his last start in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) and while he rises 4kg for this, he may take some running down as he is likely to lead. With the exception of Tashbeeh, a number of these like to get back and we know that he will make his own luck. With Brad Rawiler on board, the pair can go very close.

Race 9 - 5:00PM William Hill Cox Plate (2040 METRES)

The Cox Plate looks a battle in two with Winx and Hartnell set to dominate but for those who are keen to look elsewhere, consider Lucia Valentina. The Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) winner from the autumn has a sense of timing about her and is another that should thrive in the likely wet conditions. After taking out the Matriarch Stakes (2000m) last spring, the stable decided to alter the way they prepare the mare, keeping her on the fresh side for the big races and the move paid huge dividends in the autumn when she smashed her rivals in the $4 million Queen Elizabeth. She has had a very similar preparation this time around in terms of lead ups and results and will be primed for the 2040m after finishing 3rd to Black Heart Bart in the Underwood Stakes (1800m), when she was still a tad underdone. The Kris Lees-trained six-year-old is likely to settle back and if the pressure is on the leaders from a fair way out, look for her to rattle home.
