Looking for tips for Cox Plate Day? Read our race-by-race guide and selections for all 10 races at Moonee Valley on Saturday October 22.

Our expert previews each race on Cox Plate Day including the big feature, which is the ninth race of the afternoon at 5.00pm.

Race 1 - INGLIS BANNER (1000m) 12:10pm

A bit of a lottery race to start the day, but on exposed form, it’s hard to go past the Chris Waller-trained LUIZA ($3.50) who defeated Showtime on debut. She’s drawn wide which is a concern but we can only work with what we know – and we know little about all of these. There is a bit of a boom on PURE EMOTION ($5.50) and she’s drawn well enough to get every chance with Nick Hall in the saddle. MISS WAHOO ($10) and FENG SHU ($12) finished 3rd and 4th respectively in the same event last start and are open to improvement. Both have drawn well and should be in the finish. Betting could prove the best guide.

1st – Luiza
2nd – Pure Emotion
3rd – Miss Wahoo
4th – Feng Shu

Race 2 - CITY JEEP HANDICAP (955m) 12:40pm

GUN CASE ($4.75) has gone to a new level since joining Darren Weir’s stable and he is undefeated in two runs at The Valley. He will need some luck from the wide gate but is still the horse to beat. FELINES ($5.50) scored in a strong race at Randwick last start, and with fitness on her side over a shorter trip, she can afford to settle right behind General Jackson who looks the likely leader. If she gets out at the right time, she’ll be right in the finish. DIAMOND OASIS ($9) is with Weir now and looks ready to run a big race third-up from a spell with Brad Rawiller aboard. O’MALLEY ($3.30) has great form behind Wild Rain and Heatherly and I can see him following Gun Case in the run – just not sure he can get past Gun Case though.

1st – Gun Case
2nd – Felines
3rd – Diamond Oasis
4th – O’malley

Race 3 - BERTOCCHI CROCKETT STAKES (1200m) 1:15pm

OVERSTEP ($9.50) has drawn best of the top chances and looks suited dropping back in trip with her on-pace style. She tried to lead all the way last start over 1400m but may not have the pace to do that over 1200m. She’s likely to land in the box seat behind the speed and pounce in the straight. PROMPT RESPONSE ($9) was unlucky last time and can bounce back with some luck from the wide gate, while MY COUNTRY ($6.50) and MOTOWN LIL ($9) are classy but have also drawn wide.

1st – Overstep
2nd – Prompt Response
3rd – My Country
4th – Motown Lil

Race 4 - TELSTRA PHONEWORDS STAKES (1200m) 1:50pm

Damien Oliver copped a lengthy holiday for all but knocking KEN’S DREAM ($3.20) over in the Blue Sapphire, and with a bit more luck and peak fitness on his side, he’s the one to beat. HIGHLAND BEAT ($17) is an extremely talented galloper and blinkers go on for the first time which could see him closer to the speed than previously in the Blue Sapphire. DALRADIAN ($6) was runner-up to Flying Artie in the Blue Sapphire and has to be included, while DAM READY ($7.50) should get a great run in transit and have something to offer in the straight.

1st – Ken’s Dream
2nd – Highland Beat
3rd – Dalradian
4th – Dam Ready

LADY LE FAY ($2.60) was just one run short last time at Randwick over her pet trip and should be near her peak now. From a good gate, she looks like one of the best chances on the card. ANTELUCAN ($8) will try and lead throughout and will look the winner early in the straight. DULVERTON ($21) is at big odds and seems to love racing at The Valley – she’s a good chance with any luck in running. ALASKAN ROSE ($9.50) won well first-up this campaign, was honest last time and can enjoy a soft run before challenging late.

1st – Lady Le Fay
2nd – Antelucan
3rd – Dulverton
4th – Alaskan Rose

Race 6 - P.W. GLASS FILLIES CLASSIC (1600m) 3:00pm

I AM A STAR ($3.30) is ready to peak fifth-up from a spell and was brilliant finishing runner-up to Global Glamour in the Thousand Guineas (1600m). She’s a clear top pick on form but will need some luck if she drifts back from barrier 2. SEZANNE ($3.60) also has form around Global Glamour in the Flight Stakes and will need luck from the wide gate. KHASEEB ($41) is at massive odds but has attracted the services of Joao Moreira. That seems a good indicator she has come on from her last start win, and on breeding, the step up in trip looks ideal. Can surprise from a good gate. CEYLON ($9.50) is a progressive type that can  also make the leap in grade.

1st – I Am A Star
2nd – Sezanne
3rd – Khaseeb
4th - Ceylon

Race 7 - SCHWEPPES CRYSTAL MILE (1600m) 3:35pm

With fitness on his side, THE UNITED STATES ($3.50) can run a big race at his favourite track. HE OR SHE ($4.60) was no match for Winx or Black Heart Bart in the Caulfield Stakes (2000m) but will find this much easier and can take a more forward position over the shorter trip. ULMANN ($6.50) is ultra-consistent and has to go in the mix, while stablemate ROYAL RAPTURE ($7.50) will also be close up.

1st – The United States
2nd – He Or She
3rd – Ulmann
4th Royal Rapture

GALLANTE ($4.20) finished runner-up to Jameka in the Naturalism Stakes (2000m) when first-up from a spell and that’s the right form to be following. The son of Montjeu improved dramatically second-up last campaign before winning the Sydney Cup (3200m) at his third run, and he looks a great chance. WHO SHOT THEBARMAN ($4) is ready to show his best now, and EXCESS KNOWLEDGE ($4) and GRAND MARSHAL ($17) can fight it out for 3rd.

1st – Gallante
2nd – Who Shot Thebarman
3rd – Excess Knowledge
4th – Grand Marshal

Race 9 - 5:00PM William Hill Cox Plate (2040 METRES)

1st – Yankee Rose
2nd – Winx
3rd – Black Heart Bart
4th - Hartnell

Race 10 - LUCRF SUPER VASE (2040m) 5:45pm

Blinkers come off SACRED ELIXIR ($5.50) and I’m banking on him to bounce back after a poor second-up run. PRIZED ICON ($4.80) looked one run short in the Spring Champion and is sure to put himself in the finish, while SILVERA ($13) is a progressive type that can continue to improve over further ground. This is a massive step up in grade for SAYONARAMOSA ($20) but his last start win was very impressive and Ciaron Maher wouldn’t be throwing him in the deep end without justification.

1st – Sacred Elixir
2nd – Prized Icon
3rd – Silvera
4th – Sayonaramosa

There are a number of ways to bet on horse racing this weekend from a standard win or place bet to quadrellas and multibets.

SINGLE: The most common bet. The single bet involves betting on your selection to win, place, or both (each-way). If betting each-way (see our guide for what an each-way bet is), the stake is doubled as you are betting on your selection to win, and also to place.

QUINELLA: A Quinella bet is available on every thoroughbred, harness and greyhound race provided there are at least three or more runners. To win a Quinella, you must successfully predict the 1st and 2nd placegetters in any order

EXACTA: An exacta is exactly the same as a quinella. However, you must successfully predict the 1st and 2nd placegetters in the correct order

TRIFECTA: A Trifecta bet is available on every thoroughbred, harness and greyhound race provided there are at least four or more runners. To win a Trifecta, you must successfully predict the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placegetters in a given race.

FIRST4: A First4 bet is available on most thoroughbred, harness and greyhound race provided there are at least four or more runners. To win a First4, you must successfully predict the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th placegetters in a given race.

MYSTERY BET: A Mystery Bet takes the guess work out of picking a Trifecta and is generated by the betting agency’s computer. The computer system will randomly select three runners and if they fill the placings you win the Trifecta.

QUADDIE: A Quaddie bet, or Quadrella bet as it is fully known, is available on most thoroughbred, harness and greyhound race meetings. A quaddie is betting on the winners of four nominated races, which are typically the last four races of any meeting, and is a very popular bet.

MULTIBET: Multibets offer a great way to secure big winning returns on your bets as you combine various bets into one, and are proving to be an extremely popular way to bet. A multibet combines any number of bets from two to 25 into one single bet and dramatically increases the odds.

PATENT BET: A Patent bet is similar to a three-leg multibet but is made up of seven separate bets: three singles, three doubles and a trio. Where a multibet requires all selections to win for a return, a patent bet will yield a return from just one winner.

ALL-IN BETTING: All-In betting involves a bookmaker offering fixed odds on selected feature races prior to the declaration of the final field. All-In betting on the Melbourne Cup, for example, is available for the better part of 12 months leading into the event. The risk with All-In Betting is that you will not receive your stake back if your horse is scratched.
