Defending champion Chautauqua headlines 40 nominations for the $1 million Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on October 21.

The William Hill-sponsored Moonee Valley feature sprint takes place under the lights on Cox Plate eve as looks set to see the world's best sprint bid to defend the title he won during the 2015 Spring Carnival.

Chautauqua will be looking to become the first horse to claim back-to-back wins in the Manikato Stakes since Spark Of Life achieved the feat in 2004-2005.

The Team Hawkes-trained gelding is one of 15 Group 1 winners nominated for the race, including previous Manikato Stakes winners Lankan Rupee (2014) and Buffering (2013) as well as 2016 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) winner The Quarterback and Chris Waller’s 2015 Coolmore Stud Stakes winner Japonisme.

Other entries of note include 2015 Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) winner Lucky Hussler, Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s classy sprinter English and Group 1-winning three-year-olds Capitalist (Golden Slipper) and Astern (Golden Rose) who no longer remain among the Caulfield Guineas entries.

First acceptances for the Manikato Stakes will close at 12 noon on Tuesday, 4 October 2016.
