If you’re not playing the Exotics in big races like Saturday’s Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) you are quite simply missing a trick.

Pools for the big races attract far more money, and the best thing is, most of it is from inexperienced punters that are picking Quinellas, Trifectas and First 4s by horse name, colour of jockey silks, favourite numbers etc.

While some massive wins have been had using this method, it comes down to pure luck.

Racing is not a game of pure luck, and while there is some luck needed, doing the form will produce far more winners than a lucky guess will.

The form has been done, and I’m confident we can make some good money by playing the Exotics in the 2016 Cox Plate.

QUINELLA

WINX is by far the standout in the field and you simply must have her in everything. Having won the Cox Plate in record time last year, and remaining undefeated since, it’s hard to see her being beaten. However, I do think there are a couple of dangers that could cause an upset with the right run. BLACK HEART BART is likely to take up the running and will give a good account of himself from the front. You can’t underestimate his trainer Darren Weir as he can improve a galloper by lengths when he has them peaking. If Black Heart Bart were to build a big enough lead, he could hold on if Winx gets into trouble. YANKEE ROSE also looms as a danger with just 47.5kg on her back. She’s likely to follow Winx’s every move, and if she gets a nice cart into it on the turn, she could upset the mighty mare with nearly 10kg less on her back.

Take Winx as a standout and put in Black Heart Bart and Yankee Rose for 2nd.

Note: Winx has to finish 1st or 2nd with one of the other two runners filling the other placing for a collect.

1st – Winx
2nd – Black Heart Bart and Yankee Rose

Cost = $2

TRIFECTA:

Although I think Winx is a standout, we want to land this Trifecta, and if there is an upset, the Trifecta is likely to pay thousands. Put the previous two selections in for 1st place and 2nd place but add the French visitor VADAMOS and the John O’Shea-trained pair HARTNELL and HAURAKI. Take the same horses for 3rd and add HAPPY TRAILS who I think can run a big race and really add some value to the Trifecta, as well as classy mare LUCIA VALENTINA. Also exclude Winx from 3rd place as I can’t see her missing the first two placings.

1st – Winx, Black Heart Bart and Yankee Rose
2nd - Winx, Black Heart Bart, Yankee Rose, Vadamos, Hartnell and Hauraki
3rd - Black Heart Bart, Yankee Rose, Vadamos, Hartnell, Hauraki, Lucia Valentina and Happy Trails

Cost = $90

FIRST 4:

Play the Trifecta numbers and add all the 3rd selections for 4th place.

Option 1:
1st – Winx, Black Heart Bart and Yankee Rose
2nd - Winx, Black Heart Bart, Yankee Rose, Vadamos, Hartnell and Hauraki
3rd - Black Heart Bart, Yankee Rose, Vadamos, Hartnell, Hauraki, Lucia Valentina and Happy Trails
4th - Black Heart Bart, Yankee Rose, Vadamos, Hartnell, Hauraki, Lucia Valentina and Happy Trails

Cost = $450 but $45 will get you 10% which should still see a big profit if Winx doesn’t win.

With Winx being the one they all have to beat, a much cheaper option would be to stand her out. If Winx does win, the Exotics won’t pay much as most punters would be standing her out. But if she does get knocked off, the First 4 could pay anything.

Option 2:
1st – Winx
2nd - Black Heart Bart, Yankee Rose, Vadamos, Hartnell and Hauraki
3rd - Black Heart Bart, Yankee Rose, Vadamos, Hartnell, Hauraki, Lucia Valentina and Happy Trails
4th - Black Heart Bart, Yankee Rose, Vadamos, Hartnell, Hauraki, Lucia Valentina and Happy
Trails

Cost = $150
